Fitting a car dash cam

Ask for a dash cam for Christmas!

It will not be top or even on most people’s Christmas gift shopping list but with the average UK household expected to spend around £748 on Christmas presents this month, the gift of a dash cam could make for cheaper and hassle free motoring.

A good quality dash cam can be bought for as little as £50 and can provide detailed photographic evidence of the circumstances of a motor accident that could save you thousands of pounds and a lot of inconvenience and distress.

Last year insurers dealt with 833,000 motor accident claims that involved more than one driver – that’s over 2,000 claims every single day. In some incidents where any blame is disputed, dash cam evidence could make all the difference in confirming where any fault may lay and so speed up the handling of a claim. An example of how a dash cam works can be seen here.

It can protect you from being the latest victim of staged accident gangs. Deliberately staged motor accidents put innocent motorists at risk and dash cam footage can help show if a crash was staged or not.

The good news is that it may also be possible to get cheaper car insurance if you install a dash cam, so it is worth checking with your insurer or insurance broker.

Ben Howarth, ABI’s Senior Policy Adviser, Motor and Liability, said: “There are not many Christmas buys that can quickly more than pay for themselves. A dash cam is not just for Christmas but is your in-car eye witness providing evidence that can save you thousands of pounds every time you get behind the wheel.”
